Was diagnosed with HSV2 on 11/22 about a week of onset of initial outbreak, and started first round of 1g Valtrex twice daily for 7 days. Continued to get sores, and the script was renewed for another week (11/29). Today (12/7), I started 500mg Valtrex daily as suppressive therapy with several sores, itching, tingling, and burning plus a bartholins cyst. Doctor is stumped why I’m not responding to Valtrex. I’ve taken it religiously and seem to have new sores show up every few days as others are healing. She now wants me to start on gabapentin and start a topical. My question is what other options for treatment do I have to resolve/reduce my outbreaks?
How were you diagnosed with HSV 2? Swab test, blood test?
I would say that the higher dose should be the one that was continued.
What is your status now?
Terri
Hi Terri… thanks for responding. Swab test was positive for HSV2. I’m now on 1g Valtrex daily (started 12/8) for a month and then will drop down to 500mg daily for a year. My symptoms have reduced in severity and intensity, but I have 2 bumps forming and a lesion in my inner labia (just saw tonight). I’m also on 300mg of gabapentin for nerve pain/intense stinging and crawling stemming from the initial outbreak. This is mild now.
Not all bumps are herpes so if there is any question, you could have them swab tested. Glad the meds are helping.
