26 years ago I was with someone who Obviously had some thing the condom wasn’t on yet and he touched me anyway’s later I went to the Gyno to get what I thought was a yeast infection checked out i had no sores just Extremely red and burning. A few days later she called me back and told me I had herpes I never found out if it was type one or type two and cannot get the results now as it is so long ago I totally broke down and spend time in the hospital when I got out I went to get a blood test for HSV-2 which was negative it may have been too soon I’m not sure but the person that I was with said prior to the time he was with me he had oral sex with somebody who had something on her mouth. So I’m thinking maybe I have HSV one genitally because I never got any symptoms or anything else after that Anyway I got the negative test for HSv2 didn’t have one for Hsv1 but I think I had that as a kid not sure went on my Merry way and got married and have not had a problem over the past 20+ years I went through menopause and stopped having sex for other reasons during the past three years I have been getting it definitely looks like herpes Had a blood test the I GM was negative for one and 2 the IGG for hsv1 was 21 for HSV 2 and 6.834 HSV-2 never told my husband because I thought I didn’t have it what do I do? I cannot get any of the records from the negative tests or the
culture because it is so long ago.

Also my husband had never had anything we had Unprotected sex over the past 20 years being that we’re married The person that I was originally with also told me he got married never had anything for the past 20 years and his wife never had anything. I don’t know what to think How can I be that after 20 years of nothing I getting outbreaks could it be due to menopause also recently I had one on my buttocks just one single big
one. By the time I got to the doctor he said it was too late because it was dried up to test. Can you please help give me some insight

I can understand how this must be very difficult for you.
Have you ever in your life had a cold sore on your lip? If yes, that could be why your HSV 1 is positive.
Your HSV 2 is out of the low positive range, but I have definitely seen false positives in this range. However, it is concerning.

If you are having outbreaks that you believe are herpes, probably the easiest thing to do is to get one swab tested when it is fresh and new. If the swab test is negative, you may wish to complete the herpes western blot to know if you are actually infected with HSV 2. The HSV 1 is definitely a true positive.
When people go through menopause, they sometimes do begin to have more issues with a herpes infection.

So what is your concern right now? ARe you thinking that you would like to start having sex again? Is your husband aware of your situation? Please tell me your most pressing concern right now. If outbreaks are your main concern, you could start taking daily antiviral medicine to reduce the frequency of outbreaks as well as reducing the risk of transmission, but if your husband is truly uninfected now, it is unlikely that he will now become infected.

      Hello Terri

      Thank you so much

I am not sure if I had a cold sore on my lips I don’t ever remember having one in my adulthood maybe I had one as a child I can’t ask my mother as she is no longer here. My sisters do get them.

My main question is I believe I never transferred it to my husband because I didn’t have any outbreaks we had a very active sex life. Before my current problem I have now which I’m going to take care of and have surgery and yes we will have sex again but now that I am having frequent outbreaks I am afraid that I will pass it to him again I never said anything to him he is unaware of the situation.

My question is if it’s GHSV1 Could I have gotten GHSV2 on top of that? And if you have both in the genital area do the sore come in the same spot?

How likely is it that the person Who had oral sex with the woman with something on her lip gave me the ghsv1 one and not 2.

I’m so confused by all this and so upset especially I just don’t want to give it to my husband and having to deal with my other problem on top of this it’s a lot to handle.

So basically what are the statistics of a reactivation of herpes after 20+ years and the likelihood of passing it to someone you’ve been with for a long time? How and what do I tell my husband?

I’m just so mad at myself that I didn’t get copy of the lab reports from 26 years ago so I would know what I have or don’t have

Basically I’m so nervous to get it swabbed and have a come back as GHSV2.

Basically I only get 2 to 3 small sores and they go away pretty quickly the one on my butt was a new thing and it was big and it was disgusting.

What is the difference between HSV-1 and HSV-2 besides the location just that you can get it more frequently? Or are the sores more painful and worse?

      Thank you

That’s quite unlikely, but you could have HSV 1 orally and HSV 2 genitally

How likely is it that the person Who had oral sex with the woman with something on her lip gave me the ghsv1 one and not 2.
I really don’t know. But HSV 1 is rarely passed through intercourse.

I’m so confused by all this and so upset especially I just don’t want to give it to my husband and having to deal with my other problem on top of this it’s a lot to handle.
I would strongly suggest, again, that you get the western blot to find out exactly what you have now. Without that, you just can’t know where to begin managing things.

So basically what are the statistics of a reactivation of herpes after 20+ years and the likelihood of passing it to someone you’ve been with for a long time? How and what do I tell my husband?
Please see the answer just above.

I’m just so mad at myself that I didn’t get copy of the lab reports from 26 years ago so I would know what I have or don’t have
Well, maybe they didn’t even type the virus so don’t be mad at yourself!

Basically I’m so nervous to get it swabbed and have a come back as GHSV2.
You know, it is what it is, right? Now you just have to manage it and HSV 1 and HSV 2 are managed quite differently

Basically I only get 2 to 3 small sores and they go away pretty quickly the one on my butt was a new thing and it was big and it was disgusting.
Outbreaks on the buttocks are quite painful and last longer, for sure

What is the difference between HSV-1 and HSV-2 besides the location just that you can get it more frequently? Or are the sores more painful and worse?
HSV 1 genitally rarely recurs and is rarely shed. But they look the same, when they happen

Thanks for getting back to me.

So the blister on my butt could it have been shingles? It was not painful at all Just extremely itchy. It started out red then the blister formed again I have had nothing like that in 26 years? So if you have shingles how long does it take for antibodies to form for that? Is it ever just one blister?

I understand HSV-1 and HSV-2 look exactly the same and I understand that HSV2 occurs more often, are the blisters worse and more painful?

What percentage of people have HSV2 orally?

And how is HSV-1 and HSV-2 managed differently? And does the treatment very according to a primary outbreak or is it different or something that may have been there 26 years.

Of course my hope is that this is HSV one genitally because I definitely have some thing.

I’m so mad I did not keep any records I know you said don’t be mad but it’s so hard I think my mind would be so much more at ease if I just had that report.

I guess there are just are a lot of people that weren’t even aware that they had it and get blindsided by it and and start wondering how and from whom they got it from. Std test should include herpes

I was able to contact the person from 26 years ago of course he’s just telling me he doesn’t remember anything and he had a blood test it was negative and I didn’t get it from him, that he’s never had anything in the last 20 years and his wife never got anything but I believe what happened is he was having a primary outbreak and he touched me even though only for a few seconds I contracted it because it was the primary outbreak . I know deep down that’s where I got it from I was just trying to find out if his blood test was HSV one but he is not going to cooperate with me.

I know it is what it is and I have to just go forward it’s just very hard. especially when I never said anything to my husband and I am afraid that he will think that I was cheating on him but of course I never did.

Thank you for your time and understanding.

Shingles does not have this appearance. And you already have antibodies because of chicken pox.

      No, they look the same

What percentage of people have HSV2 orally?
We have no idea, but probably few

Both can be treated with antiviral medicine daily or episodically. Most people with genital HSV 1 do not take medicine daily

If you want to know your status, do a western blot for greatest clarity
