Hello & thank you for providing such an insightful & helpful service. I’m a female & have been recently diagnosed with genital hsv2 (from a swab test)

I realize that the virus may lie dormant for long periods of time, and there’s no way to know for sure exactly when I got this but… I whole heartily believe I contracted this from a recent encounter in which I only received oral sex from a man.

I have read that such an occurrence is extremely rare, and have even read from some resources (not sure how reliable the sources are though) that it is impossible to get hsv2 strictly from receiving oral sex.

I think I read somewhere that there is only about a 1% chance of this happening? Does that sound about right? If I have such luck, why can’t I ever win the lottery?

      All jokes aside…

      My question is –

1.Do you have any idea how many people have contracted genital hsv2 strictly from receiving oral sex?

      And also-

2.How likely would it be for me to also get oral hsv2 from future sex in addition to my genital hsv2?

Will I have build up some resistance to getting oral hsv2 once I aquire more antibodies? Or is it pretty much a sure thing if I choose to give a man oral without a condom?

I look forward to hearing from you
      Thank you

      1. I have never encountered a person who acquired HSV 2 from oral sex. The question of when you contracted this could be answered by having an antibody test right when you had the swab test. How long ago was that? If you had antibody present at the time of the swab test, this was NOT new infection. If it has been less than two weeks since the positive swab test, you could do the antibody test (IgG only)
      2. Once you have well established HSV 2 genitally you will not get it orally. They are two very different nerve groups and the virus stays in the nerve group in which you become infected.

      Ok,thank you so much Terri.

That’s half reassuring and half even more confusing.

It’s reassuring because if I’ve had this for longer than I believe,, that would mean that I’m less prone to autoinoculation. Which another question for another time because I’ve been terrified that I’ve spread this to my hand. I may purchase another round of questions pertaining to that but for now…

      To answer your question,

It is too late for a blood test because I received the swab on 6/15/15.The reason I believe I encountered this from the day I received the oral is because I started itching 20 days after the encounter and then noticed the blister a couple of days after the itching. Before this day that I recieved oral i had been abstinent for over a year.I have never had any lesions in my life except for this time but I do have a history of getting anal fissures every so often so who knows, maybe I have had this for longer than I know.

I started taking antivirals immediately after my Dr appointment on June 16 and feel the need to continue taking them for atleast 4 months, just because of my phobia of autoinoculation. I am mostly against taking meds but I feel the possibility of this spreading outweighs the risk of taking the meds, for now anyway.

      If I may ask-

What is your opinion on meds? Do you believe that by taking meds, I’m not giving my body it’s full potential of building it’s own immunity?

In other words, does taking meds make the bodies natural immune system weaker in fighting this virus in the long run?

Thank you again for your time Terri.

It is not too late to take an antibody test, particularly if you are taking antivirals. You can delay seroconversion by taking antiviral therapy for months or even longer. If you have a strong response on your antibody test it was likely NOT from this contact. Meds don’t really make your body’s immune response weaker, but it does keep certain parts of the immune system from producing a robust response. Generally, that’s OK because the medicine sort of takes the place of the immune response, but if you’re trying to find out if you have herpes or not. But in this case you know you have HSV 2 from the swab test – what you don’t know is if you have old or new infection. The antivirals won’t hurt you, no. Am I answering your question here?

Oh Terri, you are wonderful. That answers my question completely. I made an appointment to get an igG test tomorrow so I may purchase more questions from you in the future.I really appreciate your response .

      Thank you!

      Hello again Terri!

I wasn’t sure whether to start this as a new question or not but I figured it would be easier for you to remember me if I just followed up here.

So I took the igG test as you recommended yesterday.I already got my results back this morning .The results say that my number as of right now is a high 9.05.

I now know that this is NOT a new infection and I did not get this from the oral oral sex I recieved a little over a month ago.

      My questions are

1.I know everyone’s body is different but do you have any idea how long I’ve had this? For a number like 9.05 , would that take months? If it takes months, about how many months? Or would it take years?

      2. Is it safe to say that I am officially out of the autoinoculation stage? (I’ve been very worried about that)

3.I have experienced anal fissures randomly for a couple of years, and the outbreak that I had swabbed (the only outbreak that I’ve ever actually seen) was on my anal region.Do you think the fissures have been outbreaks all along?

4.Do you think I will most likely only get recurrences in the anal area?

Thank you so much again for all your help! I would have never thought to get a blood test taken after the initial swab diagnosis but I’m so glad I did, thanks to your advice.

I know this is crazy but I feel partially relieved.I kind of feel like some of the mystery of how this may manifest itself in the future has been answered. And I kind of feel like if I have been living with this for so long and had no idea, I almost feel like I can continue to live how I did before (with the exception of being more careful not to pass this on to future partners)

I look forward to hearing from you again & many many thanks!

Also, Terri, if you’re not able to estimate about how long I’ve had hsv2 from the 9.05, does the numeric value tell us ANYTHING?

      Anything at all?

No, no idea how long you’ve had this and there is simply no way to tell. It could be the first person you ever had sex with – there is just no way to know.

      2. Is it safe to say that I am officially out of the autoinoculation stage? (I’ve been very worried about that)

      Oh yes, well past that!

3.I have experienced anal fissures randomly for a couple of years, and the outbreak that I had swabbed (the only outbreak that I’ve ever actually seen) was on my anal region.Do you think the fissures have been outbreaks all along?

They certainly could be, yes. I’m assuming that the lesion that was swab test positive was from the anus? You could continue to have outbreaks there or they could show up anywhere in the boxer shorts area.

4.Do you think I will most likely only get recurrences in the anal area?

      see above.

      Ok,thank you again Terri!

Yes, the lesion I had swabbed was actually BY the anus.Closer to the perineum though. But yes, in the anal region. I am hoping never to experience an outbreak directory on my vagina but, I understand there are no guarantees & that the whole “boxer shorts area” can be affected .

My last question before I keep bugging you is..

Does the numeric value of the igG test tell us anything all besides positive or negative?

      Anything?

( I take it a 9.05 is higher than the average positive? )

Well, it tells me only that you didn’t get infected in the past few weeks. It tells me that you’ve mounted a robust immune response to the virus. 9.5 is not higher than the average positive, not.
