Terri,
Thank you in advance for your time. My question is so convoluted but I’ll try and lay it out as simply as possible. I was diagnosed with HSV2 officially x 3 years ago but have lived with it for 15 yrs. My first episode was really bas but as the years went on, were few and far between. To date I’ve had OB’s on my right thigh above my knee (its been a long time since the last OB here) genitally and next to my right ear. I tend to have OB’s on my ear more than any other part of my body ( I get an ear ache and several days later an OB. Happens before my period). I stated suppressive therapy 2 years ago (500 mg of Valtrex) but am not religious about taking it everyday as I should be. Currently I’m in long term relationship with a man who’s also HSV2 positive (He got this from me but decided to stay despite, he’s such a wonderful guy). For many years he and I used condoms 100 % of the time but recently stopped. About, maybe two weeks ago he and I had intercourse and after I noticed I had a small spot on the upper part of my left labia. During intercourse I preformed oral sex on my partner. Fast forward about a week and I came down with a what appeared to be a routine cold. Coughing, sneezing, swollen glands and ,malaise. The 2nd day when my cold really ramped up I noticed a small dark spot on my upper lip. It wasn’t a blister just a really small dark spot that felt kind of raw. My lip wasn’t swollen or red, again no blisters. The average person wouldn’t have even noticed it. I was confused but suspected this was an oral OB and assume it was from the intercourse I had a week and half prior. As I sit here typing this ( 3 days later) the spot is completely gone. My lips NOW, not before, feel slightly weird. not tingly just….. Its hard to describe. I’ve never had a cold sore before but have to admit I recall feeling a tingle maybe once or twice in my life. My questions are these 1) since my boyfriend and I both have HSV2 ( he takes suppressive therapy too by the way 500 mg Valtrex) do we have to use condoms? 2) do you think what I described orally was herpes? if so do you think it was new from the other day, or do you think its always been there? 3)should I now be concerned with performing oral sex on my boyfriend? what if im shedding virus from my vagina but during sex, he asks me to give him oral? will I end up infecting my mouth further? 4) whether this is a new oral infection or not, do you anticipate that future episodes will be this mild or could I end up with blisters on my mouth now? 5) lastly, as I mentioned I get OB’s near my ear. How concerned should I be that I could end up with an eye infection? In a bid to control OB’s Ive now started being better with med compliance and have added 1000mg of lysine x 2 a day to my regimen, do you think this will help with OB’s? Overall what advice do you have in terms of how my boyfriend and I interact, how much protection do we need?

No, you do not
2) do you think what I described orally was herpes? if so do you think it was new from the other day, or do you think its always been there?
If you are getting outbreaks on your ear, and they really are herpes, then I would bet a whole lot of money that you have HSV 1 infection facially. It lives in the trigeminal nerve group and can show up anywhere on your head, basically. So ths thing on your lip, if it was herpes, is likely from your own virus. It would be highly unlikely for you to get HSV 2 in a new location on your body now.
3)should I now be concerned with performing oral sex on my boyfriend? what if im shedding virus from my vagina but during sex, he asks me to give him oral? will I end up infecting my mouth further?
No
4) whether this is a new oral infection or not, do you anticipate that future episodes will be this mild or could I end up with blisters on my mouth now?
You could, but if you do, it is likely from you old well established infection.
5) lastly, as I mentioned I get OB’s near my ear. How concerned should I be that I could end up with an eye infection?
The virus could travel to your eye, yes. But that is not common and there is no point in worrying about it. It is what it is. If you get eye symptoms, you should have them checked out.
In a bid to control OB’s Ive now started being better with med compliance and have added 1000mg of lysine x 2 a day to my regimen, do you think this will help with OB’s?
No, I do not.
Overall what advice do you have in terms of how my boyfriend and I interact, how much protection do we need?
If you were my clinic patient, I would advise you to put concerns about transmission with your already infected partner behind you and enjoy sex with each other!
