Is oral sex the only way HSV1 can be transmitted to the genitals? I was recently diagnosed and trying to understand how it happened. I haven’t had a cold sore, but did have an HSV-1 outbreak in my vaginal area, as confirmed by my obgyn (I am on a 10-day treatment of Acyclovir.) Related, can I now expect to get cold sores, too, or will it be relegated to my genital region? Thank you!
Receiving oral sex is the most common way to get HSV 1 genitally, yes. it is conceptually possible through intercourse but I have not personally ever seen that as HSV 1 genitally sheds virus so infrequently. Was a swab test done to confirm your diagnosis? While it is possible you could get cold sores in the future, we often see only one site of the body infected, in spite of the fact that oral sex and kissing happened at the same encounter.
