About 15 years ago my doctor did the swap test on me and the result was herpes and i did not know what type it was. I did not have to go through pain or suffer much. Base on the recurrence i think it might be type 2. Normally there are about 3 or 5 very tiny blisters show up on one side of my buttock, (sometimes I can tell, not all the time), itchy for few days without pain.
For the last many years I was extremely busy with work and small kids and did not pay much attention to myself. lately I’ve been hoping to move on with a new relationship and asked my doctor put me on suppressive therapy. It has been 3 months and 500mg valtrex a day. I do not know if it is not the right dose or just the coincidence, i had outbreak last month when I was sick, again this month for having trouble sleeping. All i think because I’ve been too worried about loosing the person I’ve met and very much interested in him. Here are my questions:
1/ What blood test should i ask my doctor to send me to the lab to know the type? and do I need to get off valtrex?(I did ask both my doctor and my gynocologyst but none of them knew).
2/Should i increase valtrex to 1000mg? or ask my doctor treat my sleeping problem first?
3/My gynocologyst said that i could break the news to my partner that herpes, it’s like having cold sore not on the mouth, but on my buttock. Is that acceptable?
Thank you very much for your help. -

If you were diagnosed 15 years ago, you should have had plenty of time to make antibody. I don’t think the current Valtrex would interfere with the testing at this point. The test you need is type specific IgG antibody – definitely not IgM
2/Should i increase valtrex to 1000mg? or ask my doctor treat my sleeping problem first?
No, get tested first. Let’s see what you have. Your sleeping problem is very important also, however.

Well, yes, but you need to know what type you have first. Cold sores are HSV 1, but you need to find out if you have HSV 2
