Two weeks ago I was running errands with my family. We went to the garden section of home depot and lowes in 115 degree heat. When we got home my seven year old daughter went to change clothes and she noticed six red bumps on both of her thighs. Two are at the top of her left thigh and two are about halfway down her right thigh and one is almost at her hip. They did not hurt or itch her. She has had no flu-like symptoms, loss of appetite, or pain. She has always had sensitive skin and gets flare ups from eczema on her butt, back of legs and arms in the creases. I was diagnosed with HSV 2 through routine testing when I became pregnant in 2007. They never told me the levels or anything and I think I was too scared to even address the situation. I am now absolutely freaking out that somehow my daughter has contracted this. I have racked my brain for the past two weeks and cannot think of anything else. How in the world could she catch this from my husband or myself? We don’t even really show any symptoms that I know of. I took her to urgent care after a week because they still had not gone away and they thought they were bug bites. But do bug bites last over two weeks? They have been slowly fading but you can still kind of see them. I am attaching pictures please tell me what you think.

I just wanted to add that she was born via c-section. I was induced however I never dilated far enough to have a vaginal delivery. And these pictures were taken four days after we first saw them. Thank you

These do NOT look like herpes to me. If she had acquired herpes from you at birth, you wouldn’t just be noticing it now. It would have come up when she was an infant with a developing immune response. These look exactly like bug bites to me and your doctor is in the best position, seeing these to know what’s up with them

There is no way your daughter would have contracted herpes from you at this point in her life. You can take that worry off the table. HSV 2 is a sexually transmitted infection.

Thank you for the information. I am still wondering about a few things:

As I have been freaking out over the past couple days and I have been scowering the internet I have read a few examples of doctors diagnosing children with HSV 2. You mentioned in other posts that children often are false positives and shouldn’t be tested…why is that?

Also, if my husband is viral shedding and he adjusts himself down there without washing his hands what are the chances of transmission?

We have a hot tub can we sit in it with the kids?

      I appreciate your help.

Yes, I have also seen HSV 2 in children. The two options for that are that 1) they were born with HSV 2 transmitted from their mom or 2) they have been sexually abused by someone with HSV 2.

I don’t see a risk of your husband adjusting his “package” and transmitting virus to your children. Zero.
Yes, you can sit in the hot tub with your kids without transmission. There are normally chemicals in hot tubs that destroy virus and the water dilution factor also keeps this from being a worry.
