I recently went to the doctor and had a culture swab done in my genital area. It came back positive for hsv “untyped” My husband of 15 years, does get cold soars on occasional. Obviously,he has hsv1. He went and had blood work done and his hsv1 came back a 33 high positive. I am now waiting on my labs to come back to see if I have hsv1 or hsv2 or both. My question is, what are the chances of me having hsv2, if his is negative?
Should I be concerned that my test will come back positive for hsv2? Since Ive only been with my husband in the past 15 years and he only has hsv1? If I had hsv2, what are the odds of him not getting the hsv2 in the past 15 years?
It is certainly possible that you had HSV 2 before you met him, right? Have you had other sex partners before him?
The transmission rate from females to males for HSV 2 is about 4% per year so it is possible that you have had it and didn’t give it to him, yes

I received my results today. Not sure what to make of them, since my doctor has been out of the office and hasn’t explained them to me.
The order states
HSV 1 and 2 lgM and Indirect;
Test. Result.
Hsv1 IgM antibodies <1:10 titer <1:10
Hsv2 IgM antibodies <1:10 titer <1:10
Hsv1 and Hsv2 share many cross-reacting antigens.Elevated titers to both Hsv1 and hsv2 may represent crossreactive Hsv antibodies rather than exposure to both Hsv1 and Hsv2.
Does this mean I have both hsv1 and hsv2? I clearly don’t understand this result. Thanks!
That’s all they did, an IgM? That is a worthless test and the CDC says to never us it to try to diagnose herpes. What you need is the IgG test – also the CDC guideline – please call and ask that that test be added to the lab request – they should still have your sample
