A few months ago I got a swab test (q tip inside penis) done for hsv 1 and 2. Came back negative. Do to new relationship I was told it should’ve been blood. I expected positive for hsv 1 because I get cold sores a lot. Especially when I’m stressing really bad. My hsv 1 igg came back negative and my hsv 2 igg came back H 9.60. I am really confused because I get cold sores all the time and from readings that if you have orally hsv 2 recurrence is rare. Can you shed any light on this? I went through labcorp to get blood drawn and sent out from there. Any chance of mix up on results and possibly the number should’ve been for hsv1?

There is always a chance of a mix up when test results don’t match the clinical picture. Yours seems way off!
The HSV 1 screening ELISA misses about 25% of infections, so I am not totally surprised by your result. I seriously doubt that the frequently recurring cold sores are HSV 2, but given this testing weirdness, you may wish to consider having your next cold sore swab tested to be certain. If you were my patient with this test results, I would definitely do that.

Another option is to have your blood test redrawn. A 9.6 is certainly a positive for HSV 2. Have you had genital lesions consistent with that result in the past?

      Terri,

The only time I get them is during very high stress situations. Almost really from emotional stress or worrying stress. I have been getting cold sores past few years. Started happening after a bad break up.

In regards to your question, the only time I have something going on in the genital region is some blisters form immediately the next day after multiple times of dry masturbation. Anytime I use a form of lube they never come and never come after sex. When they come they are gone in two to three days.

I took your advice and had the test run again and got a hsv 2 H 9.3. I am very confused. I am not sure when the next cold sore will come either. They always come same spot on my outter lip every time though. I took the test at the same labcorp just to see if it would change. Do you have any suggestions or am I that rare case of recurring cold sores for hsv 2?

Forgot to add, if the masturbation sore go away and I masturbate again the same way they come right back but disappear pretty quickly afterwards. When my swab came back negative for both I was suprised than because I was expecting hsv 1 due to my frequent cold sores. It just seems like the results are reversed or I just want them to be reversed. I would love to be able to clear this up once and for all.

Did you have the blisters when you had the swab testing done? If not, it is not likely that virus would be picked up. If you ever get the blisters again after masturbation please get them swab tested IMMEDIATELY, preferably using PCR vs. culture.
I am guessing that the antibody test is just missing the HSV 1 infection, but a western blot would likely clear that up for you. And, just to be sure, you should have the next cold sore swab tested.

They were there. The night before the test I masturbated pretty hard and the morning of they appeared. Didn’t think nothing of it at the time though. Musically they are gone couple days. Don’t hurt, no scab or busting or anything like that. I will definitely get them swabbed next time.

Would there be a reason it’s missing the hsv 1 ? I hear a lot about western blot on forums. If I want to clear this up how can I go about getting one? Is it really that rare to hsv 2 cold sores ? I read that you can have hsv 1 in both places but rare for hsv 2. In both. I guess I am a little confused and scared. I didn’t get a cold sore until I was in a crazy emotional roller coaster and not when I get worried or emotionally stressed, they come pretty quick. Before they would come as I was sleeping but now I can almost feel when they are about to come about. Took a year or so to finally learn it. But yeah the sore down there were gone almost immediately after u got tested. They don’t last long at all and only during those activities I get them in various spots depending how I grip.

Our clinic can order the western blot for you to be drawn at a lab near you.
When you say blisters, I’m not sure what you mean by blisters – like a water blister?
The wester blot would likely clear up this issue of whether you have HSV 1 or HSV 2, neither or both.
This was your final question on this post. If you have more questions, feel free to renew. If you want to do the western blot just call the office and we will make an appointment for you to make those arrangements.
