Hello. I recently when to doctor to have complete STD text performed. I have recently ended a 14 year relationship and since then have only had sex with 1 guy. We have only had sex 3 times and it we used condoms. I have kissed 2 other guys but did not have sex. The results I got was negative for everything. Except I tested positive for IGM but not IGG. They told me this means I have recently been infected but they can’t determine if is HSV 1 or 2. That I need to come back in 3 months.
I have been freaking out and don’t know how I can wait 3 months to know what is going on. I have no symptoms. Never had sores or cold sores.
I have been googling a lot trying to sort through this. I have seen a lot of talk about IGM testing not being a useful or accurate test. That perhaps there could still be a chance I don’t have herpes at all? Any insight would be appreciated. -

There are many many many false positives on the IgM test – the CDC says not to use it and it causes such worries! So sad you had it done. Please ignore this. While it is not wrong every time, it is wrong very often. A simple fix would be to have your partner tested – if he is negative by IgG, then if he has been your only partner, you are too. Easy.
There is a HUGE chance you don’t have herpes at all – for sure! Three intercourses in your life, all condom protected? I would be shocked if you had genital herpes.

I have only had sex with new guy 3 times. I was married prior and with the same guy for 14 years.
So after 3 months do I still go back in and get tested again. Or just wait it out. Since I have had no symptoms at all ever in my life. I’m 33 now.
I really wish I wouldn’t have done this test it has caused so much worry!

well, when was the last time you had sex with the new guy? You should be tested 3-4 months after that.
The easiest way around this is to ask the man you had sex with to be tested so you can know. If he is negative, then you are negative because unless you had another partner within the past 3-4 months, you can’t be infected if he isn’t infected right? Can you ask him to do that?terri

It’s been a few weeks. He is the only one since my ex I have had sex with. I just hate to ask him especially if it in fact just a false negative.
The only other experience I have had since the end of marriage was giving guy a hand job. Could this in any way spread HSV? If when he ejaculated it got on me? I had my pants on the entire time.
Why is the IGM not reliable? -

Why the IgM has so many false positives we cannot say – we just know certainly that it does.
Hand jobs are not a risk for HSV.
If you don’t want to ask him to be tested then you will just have to wait to be tested again, I thinkTerri
