› Forums › Herpes Questions › Positive PCR – should I get Western Blot?
I have tested positive for HSV2 antibodies twice (first at 2.89 IgG, second at 2.19 IgG, and both with a “Positive” supplemental test through LabCorp.) I had zero symptoms at the time of both tests and no known exposure – the original screening was done as a routine STD screening with a new PCP. The second screening was done to rule out false positive. (I’ve only had 3 sexual partners in my life, so I was quite surprised by the results.) A few months later I had what I thought was a (genital) outbreak, with one blister. PCP swabbed it and it came back as Positive for HSV2 via a PCR test. I’m now on daily antivirals (it’s been about four months now.) I am just now learning about Western Blot tests. Do you think I should get one, with my IgG levels being what they were? Or since I got the positive PCR test, is that definitive?
Secondly, I’m female and I’m dating someone new and will need to disclose to him soon (if I am indeed positive). Given that I’m on antivirals, what can I tell him is his risk of contracting it – with and without condoms? Should I suggest we stay away from him giving me oral sex (I’m not really into the dental dam situation)?
Thanks for the work you’re doing! I felt really ashamed when I got these results. It helps to have places like this forum to turn to.
With a positive PCR, you don’t need a western blot for confirmation of your HSV 2 diagnosis, no. The PCR is definitive.
The risk of transmission with you using antivirals and him using condoms is about 1-2% per year, having sex about twice a week. Him giving you oral sex present a low risk of him acquiring this orally. There are now some great little panties available for someone giving oral sex to someone with HSV that allow lots of sensation but avoids the dental dam thing.
No need to feel ashamed! I hope you are getting past that.
Terri
