Hello Terri,
My partner who had an HSV-2 outbreak a year ago is using daily 1000mg valacyclovir. She did not have any outbreak other than her initial one exactly a year ago. We never had sex yet but yesterday her genital area and my scrotum had rubbing contact for around 10 seconds. Her genital area was not fully exposed because of her underwear but it was still exposed. What is my chance of contracting herpes in this situation? Should I be worried and be on the lookout for any symptoms? -

I don’t think the situation you describe has any risk of transmission of herpes. She is on adequate suppression (more than adequate, actually) and the scrotum is pretty thick for virus to penetrate if there was any virus present.

Thank you for your response. I have one more question;
I used my fingers to stimulate her genitals including penetration exactly a week ago. I have tingling sensation today in my middle finger at the distal interphalangeal joint. I can tell exactly where it is, so it is not widespread tingling or numbness, it is a very small area just left to the midline of my finger at the joint. the tingling happens maybe 10 times in one minute so it is on and off. Do you think this might be the beginning of herpetic whitlow? As I have mentioned before my partner is on suppressive therapy (1g valacyclovir daily) and she did not have any sores. Thank you.

Update: Tingling in my middle finger is still happening. I can only feel if I focus on it. Also, there is sometimes a small tingling at the very tip of my finger. All of these symptoms started when I was at the gym so maybe holding weights tightly triggered this, I am not sure. I am just very anxious and maybe I am making up all these symptoms and scenarios. I went to the doctor today and got prescribed 1g valacyclovir 3 times a day and the doctor told me its a very low possibility but I am still very nervous. I also had a small hangnail when I was touching my partner so that is why I am worried.

Update 2: My partner has GHSV-1, not 2. I accidentally wrote 2 on my first post.

I think transmission of HSV 1 to your hand during manual stimulation of your partner is extremely unlikely. Herpes whitlow presents with quite remarkable blistering of the finger. Also HSV 1 genital infection rarely sheds virus . Have you actually tested negative for HSV 1 yourself? About half the population has this infection.
