I’m a 22Y/O female. My partner and I tested negative for HSV-2 last year when we got together. Around March 2022, I had a severe case of Mono, which caused me to severely break out in probably 8 or more cold sores inside my mouth (I am positive for HSV-1, but I never had a cold sore before getting sick). I got routine testing done about 3 months later and my result for HSV-2 was 1.41 with a negative supplemental test. I have never had an outbreak on my genitalia, and I am also positive my partner has been faithful. My GYNO said it could be a false positive, but I would need to get retested. I plan on getting a second test done, as well as the western blot test for confirmation, but I am extremely stressed about it.

Is it possible that Mono or the severe cold sore breakout caused a false positive for HSV-2? Thank you!

It is very likely a false positive. There is good agreement between a negative supplemental test by LabCorp and a negative western blot, when people do both. Mono could certainly cause an outbreak of cold sores, though they are not enough intraoral, it could be. I think it is likely that there was some cross reactivity between HSV 1 and HSV 2 on the IgG test.
