› Forums › Herpes Questions › Possible False Positive for HSV-2
Hello Terri,
About over a week ago I did an entire STD check on myself because I was getting back into the dating world after being in a relationship for almost 3 years. I was shocked to discover that my results came back positive for HSV-2 with an index level of 2.3 after doing the standard HerpeSelect IgG blood test. I have never experienced any symptoms or breakouts and neither has my partner I was with for 3 years.
My partner of 3 years got tested once I found out my results and his test came back negative. We had sexual intercourse nearly everyday while we were together without any protection because I am on birth control. Surely I would have passed something to him in that timeframe?
I had a second test done along with inhibition testing. My second test came back positive with a 2.4 but I am still waiting on my results for the inhibition testing. I have been so distraught because it makes no sense why I would have this. The person I was with prior to my partner was my first boyfriend of 6 1/2 years who also has never shown signs or symptoms, but I have not reached out to him for testing.
I just am confused and I am wondering if this is a false positive and if my inhibition test will be reliable enough? I should be getting my final results tomorrow but I am having intense anxiety over the situation. If my next test does come back positive with the inhibition I will be pursuing the Western Blot.
What are your thoughts?
My thoughts are that you need a decent confirmatory test and the western blot is the best. I don’t love the inhibition assay as when it is positive, I’ve had several who did not confirm by western blot
Terri
