› Forums › Herpes Questions › Possible Misdiagnosis of Genital Herpes 1
I was diagnosed approx 5 years ago with genital herpes, Type 1 when my gynecologist tested some very painful sores in my vagi all area. I don’t know which lab test she used or the resulting level. I ocassionally get a few non-painful bumps in the area that don’t seem like pimples or ingrown hairs. Just small bumps. I have two tiny ones now.
I know that I have type 1 in my mouth because I had a major breakout about 7 years after dental work that went all the way down my throat that my dentist said followed a nerve perfectly. I’ve never had a lip cold sore.
My questions are:
1. Can I be tested again even though the bumps I get do not break open and heal?
2. If so, which test should I ask for?
3. Does the test differentiate between oral and genital herpes? If test is positive again, could I just be positive for oral but not for genital? So confusing to me.
Thank you.

You can get an antibody test (preferably western blot for HSV 1 or have the bumps swab tested, yes. But I think the first think you should do is to get our medical records and see exactly what testing was done and write it down here.

PCR swab test.

Your oral symptoms do not sound herpetic to me, actually. And it would be unusual to get a new infection in one location after being infected in another location.
No recurrences in either location?
