      Hello,

I have had HSV-1 for a long time. I was tested in 2009 after getting HPV and was told I had type 1 herpes and honestly hadn’t thought much of it since then. I maybe had a cold sore or two as a child, but not much since.

Recently I have had sex with a new partner, unprotected. Soon after, some redness appeared on the underside of my penis shaft. It has persisted ever since. So the timeline is such:
on 12/9 we had our first sex, then on 12/14 second sex. Somewhere around late Dec I noticed the redness on my penis but didn’t really think much of it. It doesnt have vesicles and doesn’t look like herpes pictures online but definitely the texture of the skin is different in that area. I went to my DR on 1/6 and tested negative for chlamydia and gonorrhea, but MD gave a one time dose of 1G Zpack anyway. I went back for blood test on 1/24 (about 6 weeks since first encounter) and HSV1 was 41.4 and HSV2 was negative. I also encouraged my partner to get tested and on 2/7 she got a positive chlamydia result (they didn’t check HSV of course, she had no symptoms she said). I went back to the MD on 2/7 and he would not swab my area, as there was no vesicles. He gave me an antifungal cream and hydrocortisone. I’ve only used it a few days but no real change. Now I am going on 6 weeks of this persistent redness. I also have a general malaise like feeling, and my testicles are sore and appear redder than normal (maybe I’m going crazy lol). They definitely feel sore. My lymph nodes in my neck are a little enlarged (but they kind of always are). I had a low grade temp today of 99.1 (I never really checked it until today). I am going to do another urine tomorrow and give him the first void of the day (the last one was well into the afternoon and I drink ALOT of water so it was very clear). I am waiting for the 12 week mark to get retested but I am starting to get very concerned as I feel like if it was HSV there would be some improvement by now? Esp since I have HSV1 already?

Genital herpes would not cause redness that lasted for six weeks not testicle pain nor enlarged nodes in your neck. Your symptoms just don’t sound like herpes to me. A test at 12 weeks should provide you with more certainty

Thank you for your response I appreciate what you do. I have a dermatology appointment Wednesday, will see what they think of the redness.

Final question: I took Valacyclovir 1G BID for one week. How long should I stop taking it before the blood test. Thank you for all you do.

One week of antiviral therapy will not impact a western blot if you wait 12 weeks from any concerning encounter to do the blot. But I wouldn’t suggest more
