I regrettably had unprotected sex with a new partner about a month ago. Two mornings after having sex with her, I noticed that a small area on the tip of my penis was very sensitive to my shorts. This pain went on for a few more days, so I went to the doctor and got tested for every STD (including Herpes – Blood test) at about the 11 day mark. I wasn’t aware at the time that I probably wouldn’t have antibodies, but the test for HSV1 and 2 came back negative. The doctor wasn’t concerned about herpes since there were not visible spots or any other symptoms other than the sensitivity. He gave me a steroid, and the pain went away in about 2 days. Fast forward about 4-5 weeks from the contact, the sensitivity on my penis came back, although it was much less noticeable and only causing slight discomfort. Other possible symptoms I had this time were itchy skin pretty much all over my body, and now today I am feeling some slight tingly feeling mostly in my arms, but maybe slightly in my legs towards my shins. I also have noticed redness (no bumps that I can see) around my buttcrack, as well as have been having diarrhea. Unsure if I am just being a hypochondriac, or if I should test again in a few months, or request the girl to get tested. Also, the girl I had sex with says she has had 0 symptoms and her previous partner of about a year had no symptoms either, she says.

Now the tingling has sort of gotten a bit worse, although I don’t notice much pain on my penis at all now. Feels like my ankle is on fire almost. Feeling some slight tingling in area between legs every now and then, but still mostly concentrated in arms and lower legs.

Given that you’ve never had any sores in the genital area, and you’re looking carefully, I think that a new herpes infection is less likely but since 85% of people who are truly infected with HSV two would deny having it based on symptoms, that can’t be our only guidance. You could try a couple of things. One is to ask the woman to be tested, and two, you could do an antibody test at about 10 weeks out from the encounter but be aware that false positives are common, compared to the gold standard herpes western blot just so you know, herpes would not cause pain in your arms. That is the wrong nerve group. Genital herpes would impact areas from your waist down.

Thank you. She also just tested negative for HSV 2 using the IGG test, and she would be more than 3 months out from possible infection. I think I am probably ok to say this result is fine?

I would agree.
