Hi- have HSV2 and delivered a baby 5 years ago. Didn’t know I had herpes until last year they didn’t test for it then. I think I’ve had it for a while though. No medicine of course, I mean, no valtrex, etc since no one was aware I had herpes. Baby was healthy no issues. Been hearing a lot of People talk about how concerned they are about “shedding”. I know that if you don’t have an outbreak during birth you should be fine but what about “shedding”. I just Hope my baby is fine and that I didn’t pass this stupid disease to him.

Second question: I’m sure my husband has it now, however, he doesn’t want to get tested. Is herpes virus in sperm. I read an article we’re we can pass it on to the baby through DNA? Can two people infected with HSV2 have a healthy baby? This isn’t the article I read:

      https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/pass-it-on-children-can-inherit-herpes/

We don’t take antiviral medicine as we don’t have outbreaks. Is this OK?

The article you describe is about HHV – 6 not HSV 2.
If your child is 5 and normal, it is extremely unlikely that you transmitted this virus to him/her.
You can certainly have healthy children if you are both infected. You simply need to make your OB provider know about your HSV 2 status and take antiviral medicine at the end of the pregnancy and transmission to a neonate would be extremely unlikely

      Hi Dr,

Hubby & I want to try for baby number 2. I’m positive for HSV2 (genital are) he’s had some symptoms but hasn’t been tested. So assuming we both have HSV2? Can you we make a healthy baby? I’ve read that a baby can get HSV in the utero. Is this true? Is it because of the SPERM carrying the virus? Neither of us take the medication. As we hardly ever get outbreaks. I know I should be put on antivirals at the end of the pregnancy however, do you think he should be on medication? Please let me know. Also I tried paying for this question but I’m not getting the option. Please guide me on how to make payment.

You definitely can have a healthy baby!
A baby getting herpes in utero is very unlikely, especially in women who already have disease and who have mounted an immune response, which you have.
I think there is no reason for your husband to take medication, no.
