Hello,
I occasionally get cold sores by my nostrils. My partner and I believe that I get cold sores because he gets them on the corner of his mouth occasionally.
I have heard that it is very rare for cold sores to “move”. I am aware of viral shedding when I am not having an outbreak. However, when I am not having an outbreak, how likely is it to give my partner genital herpes by performing oral considering that he already gets cold sores?
If you both truly have cold sores (and I’m not sure of that without an antibody test for both of you or positive swab tests from sores), then it is extremely unlikely that you partner would ever get genital HSV 1 infection from you. If I were in your situation, I would not give this concern another thought.

Right. Would taking a viral suppressant be helpful in the case that he might not truly have cold sores?
Yes, taking a daily antiviral medication would reduce transmission from you to him if he is actually not infected with HSV 1. You might ask him to get an IgG antibody test (which he an do online without seeing a clinician) to see if he is positive for HSV 1. It would also tell him if he is positive for HSV 2 and if he has not yet been tested. Eighty percent of people who have HSV 2 don’t know it.
