› Forums › Herpes Questions › Question regarding HSV 1/2 Combined Ab Screen, IgG
Hello Terri,
A few weeks ago I went for a routine sti screening. I requested to have bloodwork done to test for hsv as well. My doctor ordered the test and a few days later I received a positive result with a 2.91[R1]. I accepted my diagnosis but I noticed it was a combined test HSV 1/2 test. I asked my doctor if he could order a type specific test and he said no need. I still wanted to know so i went to a different provider and got tested by labcorp for type specific igG.
The test came back negative for both hsv 1 and hsv 2 with <.91. I was confused. I believed once you have igG levels they would get picked up during blood work.
I believe I only have 1 question left but I have a few (will purchase more).
I could not find anyone’s experience with a combined hsv I/II test and want to know, is it more accurate at finding infections? Is the reason that one was positive because my infection is new so type specific antibodies have not been formed? And should I trust either one of those tests or simply take a western blot to know definitively?
I simply want to know how to take care of myself and my partner as best as possible.
Thank you.
I have seen many many combined tests for HSV 1 and 2 that were positive but neither HSV 1 nor HSV 2 were positive on retest. Trust the type specific test, not the combined test. I didn’t even know they had that test on the list of possible tests that one could order anymore!
Terri
