Terri,
Let me first explain my background. I am male and I have had 3 sexual partners in the last year. I have had HSV1 oral herpes for 30 years.
In August, I had a one night stand while traveling out of the country. There was brief unprotected oral sex (less than 2 minutes) and a quick round of protected vaginal sex. Over the next 2 months I had unprotected sex (many times) with a girl in the US I was dating, last encounter was in mid September. In mid-October, I had unprotected sex with a new partner upwards of 25 times in a 14 day period.
In earl y November I had discovered 2 small blisters on the head of my penis that looked nothing like herpes. I was truly convinced that they were a result of just too much recent sex and some very dry sex (4-5 days earlier). I was traveling and unable to have them cultured, but did have an IGG test. HSV2 was negative and HSV1 was positive with a reading of 4.
In late Decemeber, I ended my relationship with the woman I began dating in October. It was a very, very stressful situation and still remains stressful. At this time, I started encountering a burning, tingling sensation in my legs and thighs, though not really on my genitals. There still is some tingling and burning in that area, but it seems to have diminished. There was never an outbreak of any kind. I once again had an IGG test. This time the HSV1 reading was 53.20 and HSV2 was 1.93. Yesterday, I once again tested and the readings were similar, 51.60 and 1.82.
Woman #2 and #3 have both tested negative for HSV1 and HSV2, I have disclosed my test results to them. I have no way to contact woman #1, she is overseas and we never exchanged contact info.
I know that I likely need to do a Western blot to confirm my results, I will call your office Monday. Based on this information, can you tell me whether or not you think my HSV2 reading is a false positive? Given the amount of unprotected sex I had with partners #2 and #3, wouldn’t you believe they would test positive, or possibly one of them? What would cause my HSV1 igg reading to skyrocket? Could there be cross reactivity between HSV 1 and 2 that is leading to a false positive? (as explained in an earlier post)
