Hi Terri!
I recently tested positive for HSV 2 via IGG at 2.04 taken through Labcorp. I have never had any symptoms, but I understand that is not unusual. After receiving my results, I met with my primary physician who ordered a PCR blood test. That test came back negative. Through my research online, I don’t understand why that test was ordered.
My doctor’s email response was: “I have reviewed your result with our Infectious Disease consultant. Your test results show that though you have had no outbreak, you had a prior infection with the virus which causes genital herpes. A negative PCR suggests there is low likelihood (but not 0 risk ) of transmitting the virus through shedding virus when you have no symptoms. Condoms are recommended for you with intercourse.”
I have already set up an appointment to take the Western Blot test with the help of your clinic. I just really want to know why my doctor would order the PCR blood test?
Thanks!
Good question!
I have no idea. Herpes is not a disease that is carried in the blood stream in adults with herpes. It might be used to diagnose a newborn who might have herpes in the bloodstream.
I think the most likely explanation is that both your doctor and ID doc got mixed up about the use of PCR. PCR should be used to detect virus in a LESION not in the bloodstream. A blood PCR has absolutely nothing to do with viral shedding. They are mixed up here.
I hope that your western blot provides clarification for your herpes status and that you will let me know when you get your results.
Terri
