I have been recently diagnosed with HSV2 with an IGG of 5.

I haven’t had any lesions or blisters and I am trying to find out when I may have contracted the virus. I had unprotected sex in on 10/17 and now that I have been diagnosed I do recall on 10/26 getting flu like symptoms with a low grade fever and tingling in my legs and around my genital area. I think this may have been my first outbreak … What do you think?

I am trying to find out if my partner transmitted the virus to me or if could have transmitted the virus to my partner. My partner had a rash a few days after our encounter however stated that their herpes testing came back negative.

However my doctor stated that based on my IGG score I have had the virus at least 3 months or more is this true?

Also I am trying to find out how can I tell when I am shedding since I do not have the lesions or blisters so that I can prevent spreading the virus. I have recently started taking Valtrex daily and wanted to know how I can have a healthily sex life without spreading the virus?

An IgG antibody test can become positive as soon as 3 weeks after an encounter causing a new infection, so the three month thing is not correct. On the other hand, it can take 3 months to become positive. So depending upon when your partner tested after the rash appeared, it may have been done too soon after new symptoms to be accurate.

It is true that you can transmit virus when you have no symptoms and I know that’s difficult to hear. Valtrex daily reduces the risk of shedding and transmission but it is not perfect so you will need to disclose your herpes status to new partners and that may not be easy.

This is a big topic and before we go into lots of detail here I think you should read the herpes handbook on this website. It’s free and will answer lots of your questions. Then come back and ask me more specific questions that are not covered in the book, OK?
