› Forums › Herpes Questions › Recurrent outbreaks since 2019
Since 2019 every month I have had outbreaks. During and around my period. Recently I had new swabs taken and they came back positive. I am perimenopausal. Before this I hadnt had outbreaks since 2008 and almost forgot about it. I have tried everything from Lysine to Chinese Herbs to Famvir to Valtrex. Nothing. I tried estrogen and progesterone and my outbreaks went away for a month for the first time ever, but came back when I stopped because of other adverse effects. To be honest, I havent stuck with anything long term because the outbreaks seem to get worse. My ferritin is very low. My doc suggested getting those up to boost my immune system w some DHEA and adrenal support. Been doing that since Sept. Though it has helped generally the outbreaks are milder, but frequency is the same. If it wasnt for the outbreaks I would feel like myself again. I am interested in what you think is happening. What else can I do?
Hi Terri can you please answer my question?
I’m not clear about the specifics of your treatment. How much Valtrex did you take and for how long? Did you take it daily and for how long?
Terri
I took daily 1000 Valtrex for a month with no change. I stopped bc I felt it made it worse. I am not taking any right now, but on iron and other supps for my immune system.
I think the appropriate move here is to have the lesions cultured, not PCR, and sent for antiviral resistance testing. This should be arranged with your provider ahead of time so they are ready to order the correct testing – first culture, if positive, then send for antiviral resistance testing.
