Good morning,
I wanted to clarify my risk of reinfection of hsv1. My understanding has always been that it’s impossible, but I’ve seen some recent info that suggests otherwise (perhaps not accurate?). I’m 34. I’ve tested positive for hsv1 5-7 years ago (last time I had std panel testing) and haven’t had regular reoccurrence of symptoms fortunately. Yesterday, a family member visited with an active cold sore on his lip. I went in for a greeting hug without noticing it. I am fairly certain our contact was just cheek to cheek on the side opposite his visible cold sore (which was on his lip anyway). But now I’m doubting myself and thinking what if he used his lips to kiss my cheek? Can I get reinfected now in a new spot on my face? I’ve always been nervous about this stuff. It’s not been on my mind much since I’ve been in a long term relationship. My wedding is coming up Saturday so I think maybe I’m just more on edge about it than I otherwise would be at this point in my life. Anyway thank you for your help in advance!
I would not worry about this kind of exposure at all. First of all, I don’t know what you read or where you read it, but reinfection would be extremely unlikely. Second, this kind of contact with cheek to cheek is not a risk for transmission even if you didn’t have it.
Terri
