I am a 40 year old divorced mom of an 8 year old son. I was in a 3 month relationship with some one who exposed me to hsv2. I noticed a bump on my labia that i had swabbed and it was negative… doc said it was ingrown hair. My blood test result was in the equivocal range of 1.05. I just had a follow up test yesterday as directed by my MD. I have had bite looking bumps on my butt occasionally and worried they may have been hsv2 bumps? I do have hsv1 as a child. My concern is now my son is getting small cold sores on his mouth.2 weeks ago we went to the beach and he broke out in a rash in the folds of elbows and legs and belly. I put hydrocortizone cream and it improved Last week he got a rash in his groin area and was diagnosed with jock itch. That put my mind at ease at the time, but then last night he got in the shower and I noticed a redish pink bump on his upper thigh near his butt cheek. I am so scared. I would never do anything to harm my son. He’s my heart. Could I have somehow pass this on to him without realizing? Does hsv2 ever come in the from of s bite or pimple? Its just all to scary cooincidences. …. do I have reason to worry about having passed hsv2 to my son? Thank u.

No. None of this presentation is consistent with herpes. None. Every male I see gets an occasional bump on his butt. The bumps on his lips could be HSV 1 (a swab would determine that) or impetigo or nothing. A pediatrician would be best at telling you what that is. But adults with HSV 2 (and we have no idea if you actually have that) don’t give this sexually transmitted virus to their children, though many worry about that very issue. It’s normal to want to protect our children from any bad thing. But this is an STD.
When was the last time you had sex with the person with HSV2?

Got follow up test back that was ppositive for hsv1 and negative for hsv2.
Just to clarify, you’re saying this is an std on my son, or just this is an std and that’s the only way to transmit it? Lol.. just bieng scared and paranoid. Thsnk

Why did I have a low positive then test negative? Is this common?

I did NOT say this is an STD in your son!! I said this is an STD and the way to transmit it is through sex. Good heavens!
It is not uncommon for a herpes antibody test to fall into either the low positive or equivocal range and not be actually positive. When was the last time you had sex with the person with known HSV 2 infection?Terri

If you tested about 3 months after the encounter with someone who is positive for HSV 2 in the low positive range I would recommend that you wait until 4 months have passed and then retest. If you are still in the low positive range, then I would recommend that you get a herpes western blot for confirmation of your antibody test.
