      Hello,
3 years ago I posted after receiving a 1.4 on an Hsv test. I was shocked, and began to think it was a false positive after reading the information here. I spoke to Terri Warren who recommended a Western blot, which for some reason I still haven’t had 3 years later. I think I’ve been scared to find out and have made this harder than it even had to be and have been beating myself up about it. I haven’t had a single outbreak or symptom but have been told most doctor’s tests are accurate and that I am asymptomatic. This summer I developed a small bump under the skin on my vagina. It is painful and uncomfortable and I had no idea what it was. I finally went to my gynecologist who completely dismissed me and told me it was a perfectly normal pus filled cyst and not a symptom of my hsv2. I told her that I’d like to be restested. On my first routine visit with her in January she encouraged me to take her test, an exposure test. On this visit, I asked to be tested telling her I kept putting off the Western blot and she discouraged me repeatedly. I persisted telling her that if it came back positive, I definitely needed a WB. She told me testing doesn’t work that way, but that she would give me the exposure test even though it wasn’t what I needed. Needless to say I felt uncomfortable and felt I wasn’t being listened to. When I checked my chart her notes read that I was extremely anxious, in addition to an hsv diagnosis being at the top of my diagnoses. I was determined to start standing up for myself and my health even if doctors disagreed. I got a message this morning that my results from the test were in and I am negative for hsv1 and hsv2. I’m shocked and relieved. I’m sure the doctor is too after she assured me that my results would likely be the same. Should I stop here and have them remove this from my medical history? Or do I need to prove it with a western blot?

I think the western blot would be to prove to YOU that you are negative. If you can believe this IgG test, then I think you can stop there. There was a very high chance the blot would have been negative at that low-level IgG. And I would certainly ask to have it removed from your records, yes. And BTW, there is no such thing as an “exposure” test – you are either infected and potentially infectious to others or you are negative. This doctor seems uninformed about herpes diagnosis, but may be very well informed about other things.
