Hello, I get cold sores frequently. I have for many many years. My worry has always been if I accidentally touch my cold sore and some how accidentally touch my genitals or near my genitals can I give myself genital herpes too? I try my best to wash my hands often. I obsess over it to be honest. But there are times (like when going to the bathroom) it can slip my mind if I touched my cold sore and then touched myself. I’ve googled this question so many times and the answers are conflicting. Many say yes and others say very unlikely or rare . Your help would be very appreciated.
In all of my years of practice, (40) I have seen one person who said they had a history of cold sores who I diagnosed with genital HSV 1. I’m not 100% sure about her history of cold sores. That’s it for me.
So could it happen? Maybe.
Is it something to worry about? Absolutely not, in my opinion.
Terri
