Hi Terri – I was seeing someone for 2 years. Before we had sex he tested negative for HSV2. We broke up for some time and recently got back together. We had unprotected sex, and then he told me that during our breakup he had sex twice with someone who had HSV2. At that point he also told me that his ex-wife also had HSV2 but she never had a breakout during their 20+ year relationship (but who knows what to believe now).
So I had HSV 1&2 testing done by Quest with the following results:
HSV 1 IGG, Type Specific AB 2.15
HSV 2 IGG, Type Specific AB 2.26I have had cold sores since I was a child so I wasn’t surprised by the positive results for HSV1. I was completely shocked by the HSV 2 results. After everything I have read I am wondering if I should do the Western Blot test. I’ve had no genital outbreaks.
Thank you for your help….this is devastating!

Yes, according to the CDC you need a herpes western blot and I surely believe you should have it. The thing is, it would be best to know your partner’s status before you test because if you are currently having sex with him and you could be newly infected because he is infected, you would need to wait a while to be tested to avoid the possibility of a false negative.
How long ago was the last time he had sex with one of the other partners and has he been tested?

Hi Terri
Thank you for getting back to me.
He said the last time he had sex with the person who is HSV positive was in September. I am no longer seeing him….we were intimate only once this second time around, which was around the end of January.
Has enough time passed for me to be tested? Where can I get the blood drawn, as I noticed on your site that Quest is no longer participating and I don’t have an Anylabtestnow facility near me?Thanks!
KimPS I asked my doctor about this. She acted as if I was crazy, stating that these tests are accurate. I need to show her the documentation from the CDC. Can you provide a link to that?

Where do you live?
Yes, the timing is fine for you to get the blot now.
Here is the link – look under type specific serologic testing

Hi Terri
I live in Branford, COnnecticut. If I can convince my Dr. can she order the test? If not can I go through you?
Thanks

Yes, you should definitely work on getting your own doc to do this. If you can’t get that done, I can help you. In your area getting your blood drawn could be a challenge but people do work that out. However you do it, please do it – don’t settle for an answer that is unclear and can impact the rest of your life.
