Hi Terri,
I’ve had HSV-2 for almost ten years. It’s been managed really well with valacyclovir, but I decided to stop it and see what happens about a month ago. Had some stressful circumstances and tada, major outbreak!
My 8 year old niece came over to spend the night on Saturday. I’m always really careful to let her use the toilet before I do. I just get nervous. Sunday morning she used it, and then I went. While I was going, she came in and said she needed to use it again. I froze, and for some reason didn’t know what to do. I got up and she hopped on.
I’m mortified. My outbreak is on my labia majora, but what if it was oozing and dripped to my buttocks/thighs? I don’t know if she had any cuts on her buttocks/thighs. She’s small; what if she grazed her vaginal area on the seat when she went to sit down? I feel so irresponsible. We are so close and she trusts me implicitly. How could I let her get so close to my disease?
I know what I did was in the past but I just need to know how likely it is I’ve infected her. I’m always so careful. I can’t believe I let this happen.
The situation that you describe is NOT a risk for transmitting HSV to your niece. Lesions aren’t going to drip down onto your thigh. And she would have to have a break in the skin in the exact location where virus dripped on your thigh or buttocks, which didn’t happen. You are worrying without cause. Herpes it not transmission via toilet seats.
Terri
