I was diagnosed with HSV 2 when I had STD testing done. On Saturday, I went swimming with my son in a pool that didnt have any chlorine in it. On Monday, he pointed out what he thought was a mosquito bite midway between his crotch and knee on his inner thigh that he said hurt when he touched it. Monday night, he got a headache. Tuesday night he also got a headache. He doesn’t usually get headaches. Could this be the initial outbreak of HSV 2? I’m so scared that I have transmitted this. Could he have gotten it in his eyes this way? What should I do?

How are you diagnosed with HSV-2? Blood antibody test? I GM or IgG? If I GG, what was the index value? It is the number associated with the positive test results. Have you had an outbreak?
There is no risk of your son contracting herpes from you in a swimming pool. The dilution of the water prevents this from happening. Please take this off your worry list. Answer my questions above so that I can be certain you have been diagnosed correctly.

Thank you for your prompt response. I had an IgG reading (by blood I’m assuming) of 1.54 with a reference range of 0-.89. I’m not totally sure what a reference range is…then it indicated High. I was totally surprised because I have never had a traditional outbreak. I do remember having a weird sore throat right under my jawline on the left side about 6-7 months ago. It was quite noticable and lasted for a few days. Since then, nothing. After my doctor told me, I felt some lip tingling and noticed a canker like sore in my mouth that healed in about 3 days. I also have some white patches on my gum line. Maybe that could be a symptom? I am having what I believe to be an initial HPV outbreak. Could that have any effect on the result?

As I’ve been thinking about this, I do remember about the same time having what I thought were 2 yeast infections. They both came with one small papercut-like tear right at the front of my labia. I bought some over the counter yeast medicine and the little tears healed within the first day of using the cream both times. Could these have been an outbreak? I thought not since they responded so quickly to the yeast medication, but maybe it’s possible.

Ah! I keep thinking of things…I also went to the doctor and was diagnosed with 2 UTI’s around this time. Could that be a symptom. I read somewhere people could sometimes mistake the two??? I took the antibiotics prescribed and the symptoms went away very quickly both times.

With an index value of 1.5, there is an 85% chance that this is a false positive. The Center for disease control recommends that any person who receives an index value of 1.1 to 3.5 on the IgG test obtained a confirmatory test and the recommended one is the herpes Western blot. The process for getting this test starts with you ordering a test kit from the University of Washington, their phone number is 206 – 685 – 6066. You will need a clinician to order this test– you cannot order the test your self but you can order the kit to get things started. You can work with your own provider to obtain this test or if that does not work for you I can be the one helping you to get this test. Please do not accept that you are infected with this value
