I recently found out an ex boyfriend of 2 years has HSV, type unknown. I recently had IgG results HSV 1 36,
HSV 2 5.12.I was certain HSV 1 would be positive due to ex spouse having HSV 1. I have exhibited no symptoms other than itching and burning on my face, neck and eyelids. I also get the feeling of an impending cold sore with no OB. When I asked nurse about suppressive therapy she stated not necessary. Question should I request the western blot and is it not reasonable to take suppressive therapy to prevent spread to a new partner whom I have not had sex with, and is 5.12 conclusive for HSV 2? And how will I know when I am shedding without symptoms in order to prevent transmission? Thank you for your help.
With an HSV 2 index value of 5.12, you are very likely to confirm as positive. I would say there is a 90-95% chance that this will confirm. So not every time does it confirm, but most times. Your call. You cannot always know when you are shedding virus, that’s the problem, you can shed with absolutely no symptoms Suppression will reduce transmission to an uninfected partner by almost half, so I would have to disagree with the nurse, for sure, if your main goal is to reduce transmission.
