      Hello Terri!

First of all after reading this forum I am feeling very hopeful but I am still scared at the same time. About 5 years ago in 2010 I went to a new gyno and received a full STD panel including Hsv. To my surprise Hsv 1 and 2 game back positive at a low index. My boyfriend at the time who later became my husband went a got tested and he was negative. I had only had one sexual partner before him and we were each other’s first. So i of course believed I acquired it from him. When he came back negative I was more confused than ever. Later on I went back to my previous gyno and she tested me again a month later and both came back negative! So I believed the negative given my sexual history and no outbreaks and my current boyfriend being negative. The last time I tested for HSV was in 2012 before we got married negative results again. We got married in 2013 so I never saw the reason to get tested for things without symptoms.

This year 2015 we actually separated and are currently going through a divorce. I started to see another guy and given my background with std horror stories I went and made him get tested before we did anything. He came back negative for everything. We started having sex and I haven’t had sex in awhile so I developed a uti and yeast infection. Of course when you google those things herpes pops up! We have had sex probably 5 times in the last two months and each time I seem to get irritated down there.. I went and got tested including HSV. Anxiety was getting to me because of that looming false positive in the past.

And to my surprise HSV 1 ugh came Back positive at 22 index and HSV 2 igg at a 1.22. He tested negative for both! I have never had a cold sore HSV 1 type since I can remember and never any symptoms of HSV 2 except for the recent yeast and uti symptoms. I know the low positive range can likely be a false positive but what are the odds I keep getting false positives in the IGG tests? I also read that out of 100
Positives only 3 are false positive for iGG.. What are my chances? Given my sexual history I feel pretty confident but these recent symptoms scare me. No lesions or anything just itchy and burning like a yeast infection.

I ordered the Western Blot test because I read that was the best course for myself.

Hello Terri! Haven’t heard back yet. Do you frequently have people test positive in western blot even with a low positive igg?

I answer questions usually within 24 hours – I think you just posted this last night.
Half of the positives between 1.1 and 3.5 are actually false positives, compared to western blot. That means half are true positives, so yes, I have seen western blot tests come back positive on people with low positives.
However, at 1.2, there is an 85% chance that this is a false positive so the odds are in your favor.

Have you seen people repeatedly get false positives on igg? And later confirm a negative WB

Yes, often, as I mentioned, half of the positives in the low positive range of 1.1 to 3.5 are false positives, so they turn out negative by western blot. That’s why we do western blots at all – to determine if the ELISA is correct or not.
