I have had unprotected sexual encounters in my teens and 20s but unsure if I was ever tested for herpes so I don’t have anything to compare my current circumstance to. However, I have never had any outbreaks or symptoms.
When I was pregnant in 2011, I assume blood tests were run regarding herpes since everything else was (drugs and other STDS). Nothing came up during pregnancy. When my son was 2, I had my first oral herpes outbreak ever (got from my ex husband) and have had cold sores off and on for years, which I’m fine with. I did get divorced and have had 3 sexual partners after that.
The last person I had sex with was in June 2019 (and was celibate 3 years prior to that with no issues). I did not know this person well, and it was unprotected. We had sex twice in one evening. I went to the gyno a month later and got a full checkup to be sure.
My blood tests showed HSV1 positive (already knew that) and HSV2 was equivocal.
Went back a month later, HSV1 positive, HSV2 positive.
6 months later- HSV1 positive, HSV2 equivocal.
This lab does not do ranges so there’s no way of knowing what that positive was.
The person I slept with said he got checked and he was also positive but never had an initial outbreak.
However, my gynos have said they do think I would have had some type of initial outbreak and wonder if it was a false positive too. I also got very sick with a high fever for a week (this was in 2020 with a respiratory infection) and no outbreak occurred. My cold sores come out when I get fevers and that’s how I first discovered HSV1 was I got really sick with a fever and had my first outbreak.
I am getting the WB soon but what do you think the likelihood is that I have it?
Is it possible this was a false positive? Why would I have two equivocals before and after? If it was NOT that person that gave it to me, I would think the first test would have been positive bc I would have proper ABs? I would also think the 3rd test would have been positive too

I think if you did confirmatory testing like the blot, it will be negative. Too bad you don’t have index values for the positive BUT a subsequent equivocal to me suggests that you are not infected with HSV 2. Are you planning to do the better test in the future?

I am getting it soon. I wasn’t going to get it originally because I figured it was just positive but that 3rd equivocal result with no symptoms really threw me. At that point, even my doctors said they weren’t so sure. My doctor is familiar with the WB and says she can order it for me from the UW. Then once I get the kit, I can go in somewhere to get blood drawn and results will be sent to her. I will report back here when I get my results. It’s been 2 and a half years and zero symptoms yet I still have hsv1 outbreaks orally sometimes. Knowing my body and how illnesses present, I will be surprised if it actually is positive.
