I was visually diagnosed with herpes around 15 years ago. I was with a long term partner and I never had another outbreak.
Basically I sort of erased it from my mind that I even had it. Now I’ve started a new relationship and we have had unprotected sex for around 9 months. 1 month ago it seems I had an outbreak due probably to a huge amount of stress and lack of sleep.
The question really is will I now start having more frequent outbreaks? and as I live in the UK I’ve not been offered the same type of testing, so I am slightly in the dark about which form I have. I believe the likelihood is I have HSV1 orally transmitted as my previous partner suffered from occasional cold sores.
And what is the likelyhood of me passing this onto my current partner, he, thus far has had no symptoms so I am (rightly or wrongly) presuming he has not caught it from me so far. I know it sounds incredibly selfish but I don’t want to have to tell him unless I am at a risk of giving it to him, in which case I would have to.
I am finding that the general literature out there on the web is seriously misleading, and for instance if he were to google herpes in a general way he may not be fully understanding.
Your outbreak pattern is certainly suggestive of HSV 1 genital infection but without testing there is just no way to know for sure. So have you been to a GUM clinic about this?
Has your current partner ever in his life had a cold sore? If yes, then he very likely won’t get your genital infection. And if he is actually HSV 1 negative, then the risk of transmission of HSV 1 is much lower than HSV 2 with genital to genital contact because HSV 1 genitally is shed far less often.

As far as I am aware he has never had a coldsore. And no I have not been to a GUM clinic, just to the doctor who was relatively dismissive.
Do you think this is the start of more frequent outbreaks?
Thanks
No, I don’t think this is the start of more outbreaks, I think for now, it is just one.
