› Forums › Herpes Questions › Transmissibility after 46 years
Hi! I’m hetero male aged 68. Had a mild outbreak, I think 46 years ago. I chalked it up to jock itch. Herpes wasn’t well known back then. Since then I’ve had several longer term relationships, plus two marriages totaling about 40 yrs. I had my first STI Panel 02 Nov 21. Positive igg 21 for HSV2. To my knowledge, I’ve never had a second outbreak or have infected any of the partners. Totally asymptomatic in all cases.
Now I’ve been dating another woman and I’m preparing to disclose. Given my long-term lack of symptoms and history of non transmission (as far as I know), what can I tell her about her probability of getting infected by me?
Your risk of infecting her is low but not zero. The duration of your infection speaks to the lower risk of transmission as well as the lack of recurrences. However, taking daily antiviral medication like valacyclovir 500 ng once a day will also decrease the chances of transmitting to her. using condoms reduces transmission by 96% from men to women as well. I would advise that you provide her something to read about herpes so she can give it some good thought and you can have an intelligent discussion with her. I hope that your relationship has been established with some emotional connection so she can see that HSV is only one small aspect of who you are.
