I have a minor child and I am deeply concerned about passing this virus to him. I have completely changed how I do things and have become OCD about things like hand washing. I know..I know…I know that this is an STD, however being a Mom who is concerned about the well being of her children I struggle with this.
My question is this…I have symptoms all the time so it has become difficult for me to determine if my symptoms are HSV2 or something else. I have had burning for 2 weeks, no other symptoms so I ‘m not sure if this is for the HSV or not. Today I showered and typically I wash my hands when I get out of the shower to be sure that I do not spread the virus to any objects, etc. A half hour or so after showering I touched an object and then handed it to my son. I immediately became concerned because I could not remember if I had washed my hands after my shower. I know this may sound like a crazy question but this has come my reality.
Then I think you need to work on forming a new reality. The chances that you will transmit herpes to your child through normal household contact is zero, but your chances of impacting your child through OCD behaviors is much higher. I strongly encourage you to seek help from a cognitive behavioral psychologist to address your OCD. They can help you. I can reassure you that this is not a risk to your minor child. You don’t need to wash your hands after you take a shower. The virus has a lipid layer surrounding it and soap destroys this layer and the virus falls apart.
If you want to know if the burning is cause by herpes, you could do some swabbing of the genital area using PCR swabs to either make you aware of shedding or let you know that these symptoms are not due to viral activity.
You are not the only person who has developed OCD around herpes. It is more common than you might think. But unless addressed soon and aggressively, it can become debilitating for you and your family. My heart aches for you as I know this must be so painful.
