I am a gay man with a partner and we have an open relationship. In November, I had noticed a red line inside my penis on my urethra. I looked almost like a cut and there was a minor feeling of a pin prick. I went to an urgent care clinic and they tested me for all STIs, including HSV2. They took some blood, but did not swab the inside of my penis/urethra or anywhere else. It came back with an IGG of 4.08. All the other standard STI tests were negative. My partner got tested and his results were negative.
I am currently on 1 gram daily of Valocyclovir. If I am not having any symptoms, what level of risk is there in transmitting it to my partner if I am giving him oral sex or he is giving me oral sex? (based on things I’ve read, it seems like he cannot get it from my mouth since I am infected in my genitals)
We don’t have statistics on the transmission of HSV 2 via oral sex (giving or receiving). But if your infection is only genital, then you giving is not a risk. And your partner giving you oral sex is a very minimal risk as HSV 2 doesn’t like the oral area and rarely lives there.
BTW, if you’ve not had an actual outbreak of HSV 2 but only this blood test, you might consider confirming with the western blot. I have most definitely seen more false positives in this area than in the past. Just a thought.
Terri
