Hi Terri —
How does transmission work when both partners are positive? I have 1+2. If my partner is positive for one or the other, what does that mean in terms of me transmitting hsv to him? Can a person be reinfected with the same strain in a different nerve group? Could he or I reinfect one another?
I’ve read some of the Q&A here, and learned that certain infections seems to inoculate for others, but I’m confused as to the details. HSV2 virtually inoculates for HSV1?
We don’t know his status yet but he is getting tested before we become intimate. But given his age and level of sexual activity, he may test positive for one or the other. We are both over fifty.
Thank you, Terri.
If both partners have the same virus then transmission is NOT an issue any longer. Yes, if you have HSV 2 already, you are extremely unlikely to acquire HSV 1 subsequently. And it really doesn’t appear to matter what the location of the infection is, in terms of transmission. For example, if you have HSV 1 genitally and he has HSV 1 orally, he is extremely unlikely to acquire HSV 1 genitally.
Good that he is being tested so that you know exactly what’s going on and what the transmission risks are. If you want to post a summary of everyone’s results when his come back, perhaps I can help you sort out who is at risk for what.
Terri
