I am 2 years post a HSV 1 & 2 diagnosis. I am asymptomatic. It’s the first thought in the morning and the last thought at night. I constantly worry about passing to my son. Just a week before my diagnosis my son asked to taste the soup that I was eating and been totally ignorant about H I obliged. It’s now memorialized as one of my worse days. He has never had a cold sore but gets some mild irritation on his face just below his lips, (it never seems to really go away) and an occasional small stand alone pimple. I inspect his face several times a day!!! Though I have never tested him I am full of guilt that it’s a possibility l transmitted it. I actually don’t wAnt to test him because confirmation of such would be too much. I have called the CDC, his pediatrician and asked members of an online group whether it’s transmitted via utensils and the Pediatrucian says Yes because it is viRal while others say no. Do you have any insight!! I know your biggest focus is genital but anything you can do to enlighten me would be appreciated. I am silently in so much pain about this! I was suppose to protect him from all things and I messed up.

I’m sorry you are in such a state of worry about this problem. I am not aware of any documented cases of HSV 1 transmission via eating utensils. The virus is unlikely to live off of the body for any substantial amount of time. Also transmission is somewhat dependent upon the amount of virus present. The likelihood that you would transmit this to your son via a spoon it Is extremely low. In addition, his symptoms do not sound her Pedic to me. It is very important that you do not ask someone to do an antibody test on your son. The rate of false positive results on this test are greater than 50%. That is, of the positives identified on this antibody test, Half are false positives.
Let me ask you a little about how you personally were diagnosed. Did you have a swab test of a lesion or did you have an antibody test? Are you able to obtain a copy of the test results if it is an antibody test for me to review? Do you actually get sores orally and/ or genitally?
If herpes is the first thing you think about in the morning and the last thing you think about at night I feel that you need some psychological help in dealing with this diagnosis. I know you are worried primarily about your son, but I think it is unlikely that you will ever infect him while serving in your role as parent.
Please let me know if you have other questions.

Ok, I have google some stuff and supposedly bonafied sites. So very exhausting.
I presented to my gyno for annual and since I was one month shy of my 40th birthday I had all test run and H was included. I did a blood test, Igg I believe. My results are at home Never got a cold sore and never have lesions or sores during my pelvic. I did however get tingles after finding out. If it was occurring prior to a diagnosis I never paid attention.
I may need to speak to someone but I thought I was coping but overall I am not!
Thanks for the response!’

I want you to obtain a copy of your test results as soon as possible please. There should be numeric values associated with your two positive results. Please post those numbers for me to evaluate and then we can make more sense out of what is going on with you. I will await your reply.

Well both are technically positive. The IgG for HSV 1 is in what we call the low positive range (under 3.5) and the HSV 2 is jut barely over that level. It is likely that both are truly positive. However, given their very close result to values that need confirmation and how upset you seem to be about this I would recommend a confirmation test, if you want to do it, just to be certain. It is the herpes western blot. We can order this for you at a local lab near where you live. If you want to pass, it’s OK but the HSV 1 is definitely in the range that we would normally confirm routinely.
