First topic. I have befriended the ex-girlfriend of the guy that gifted me HSVT2. I asked her “did he tell you he had HSVT2?”, She said no. When he and the ex-girlfriend started dating, my sister poked her nose where it doesn’t need to be, she contacted the ex-girlfriend letting her know what he gifted to me, so the girlfriend demanded that he get tested. He did and she indicated to me that the results were he had HSVT1 (NOT HSVT2) and she “dodged that bullet”. How can this be? How did she “dodge the bullet” (i.e. doesn’t have either, unless of course she’s not being 100% truthful) when he and I were intimate and they were intimate? How does he NOT have HSVT2, but HSVT1? Is this possible?
Second topic – suppressive therapy. I’m dating someone, who is aware of my gift, and I take 1000 mg of Valtrex 10 days before he gets in town and through the last day he is here. Am I taking too much? Am I taking it too early? What’s the minimum dosage and the minimum amount of time I need to start taking it before he gets in town?
Thanks!!!

So how do you know that he gave you HSV 2? Did you have a negative antibody test for HSV 2 with a positive swab test for HSV 2 at the same time? That is really the only way to know for sure if a person has a new infection. There is virus present on the skin but not enough time has passed for antibody to have been produced. How exactly were you diagnosed with HSV 2? Had you had other sex partners in your lifetime besides him? If he truly only had HSV 1 then he could not have given you HSV 2.
Your use of suppressive therapy is completely appropriate and timely. If you start 5-7 days before he arrives, that is adequate for reduction of transmission. You know it isn’t perfect but it is very useful, especially accompanied by condom use.Terri

I have had other sex partners in my lifetime, besides him. I know he gave me HSVT2 because: a) he was the first person I was with after my ex-husband of 8 years; b) I had an outbreak 6 days later (I thought it was simply a really bad yeast infection) and visited my OBGYN, he said “I’m sure this is herpes”, he swabbed the area and I got my test results that indicated HSVT2. If it is not possible for him to have HSVT1 and to give me HSVT2, then I can only conclude that the ex-girlfriend isn’t being 100% truthful.
My outbreaks aren’t bad at all, I rarely have them, if I do it’s almost always around my monthly cycle and one lesion.
Is 1000 mg too much? I’ve read that 500 mg is the required dose, but I just want to be sure I’m taking the correct dose for suppresive therapy.

Well, that sounds pretty definitive.
So that leaves two possibilities – either he is lying to her or she is lying to you right?
The initial approved dose was actually 1000 mg and 500 as a secondary dose. So the dose is just fine. If you would like to try less (the 500) and see if it works well for you, you could run that idea by the person who is prescribing for you.Terri
