A month ago I went to my annual gyno appt. and got tested for STD’s. The nurse asked me if I wanted the full panel including herpes testing so I said sure- even though I had no reason to suspect I had herpes. I was in a monogamous relationship and didn’t have worries. I tested positive for HSV-1 with an igg index of 6.65 (no surprise i get cold sores) but I also tested positive for HSV-2 with a value of 1.72. I was very confused because I didn’t expect that at all, so I went home and did a ton of research and found that different criteria increased your chance of getting a false positive and I met all of those. I was low risk, I have HSV1, I’ve never had any symptoms, and when I told my partner he got tested and was negative for HSV-2.
My doctor didn’t give me any information about false positives or retesting or anything so I’m wondering if I should get retested and what my chances may be for having gotten a false positive.
What you need is a herpes western blot antibody test. This is the gold standard test and should be used for any person with an index value of 1.1 to 3.5 for confirmation. Our clinic can order this test to be drawn at a lab near you and shipped to University of Washington OR you can contact UW directly, they will ship you a kit, your doctor will draw the blood, spin it down and ship it to UW. At your index value there is a 60% chance this is a false positive result.
