Good morning Terri,
I super appreciate this website as it has help me feel better about my situation but I wanted to ask you directly. My roommate and her boyfriend has genital herpes. Last Tuesday I used the bathroom about 15 – 2o mins after one of them did. I was wiping myself and accidentally hit the backside of my hand directly where I had a few open sores due to severe dry hands. I’m sure there was urine or some kind of backsplash on the underside of the seat where I hit my cuts against twice by accident. Is there any possibility I could get herpes either on my hand or in general from this? I know both my roommate and her boyfriend haven’t had a outbreak in years but I know the virus does shed. I appreciate your profession option.

The situation that you describe is NOT a risk for acquiring herpes on your hand. Not at all.

Thank you for your response!
I do have another question.
My cat was hanging out with my roommate in her bed. The cat proceeded to walk around the house a bit then stay with me on my bed for the rest of then evening. Could she possibly have transferred the virus to my sheets or my clothes? Also, she did starch me in my lady region by accident a couple hours later. Is there a chance for transfer there from my cat’s nails or paws to me?
I do apologise in advance, I’m having a ocd fear going on here. I’m currently seeing a therapist which is helping out. I hate feeling this way. I don’t want to be afraid of my friend or her boyfriend. If there is any advice you can give me while living with my roommate, I would appreciate it.

The situation with cat also presents ZERO risk of transmission of an STD of any kind to you. It’s OK to ask me questions, even if you think it’s OCD to do so.

Thank you Terri,
What should I do to protect myself in regards to transmission from roommate? What situation would cause transmission?

Unless you are having sex with your roommate or kissing them, HSV is not a risk from them. I am assuming that you know from an antibody test that you are negative for HSV 1 and 2 and that you know that your roommate is positive for one or the other?

Yes, that would be correct.
