Hello Terri,I have a question in regards to a someone close to me. She has oral hsv 1 and takes a daily suppression of valtrex because of her constant outbreaks during the year.
She had a possible exposure in 2021 to hsv 2 (unknown status).
She continued to take igg tests with lab corp, all being negative. She even took one this past week with lab corp being herpeselect and it was negative for hsv 2.
Every single test has been positive for hsv 1 which she knew of already. Her doctor said even though she is on a daily suppression for hsv 1 oral because of those outbreaks that her body would have produced enough antibody to hsv 2 after almost two years if she was truly infected.
She has not had any symptoms other than a small rash on her groin that disappeared the next day. She also was off of the suppression for two months and tested negative but had to get back on because of the cold sore on her lip. She has a stressful job so that doesn’t help.

What are your thoughts on this?
Can she be a false negative after two years? If that is the case.. many people who take a suppression for oral hsv 1 (due to recurring outbreaks) and become exposed to hsv 2, they may test negative all their life but can truly be positive?

New information: I apologize for the confusion. Her doctor gave her a prescription Jan 2022 for 60 capsules and took those from Jan 2022-December 2022. (Intermittently not daily since it’s only 60 tablets, during the full year 2022)
She Tested negative igg this past week. She has not replenished the prescription. Is it safe to say she is negative?

With 92% certainty, she is negative for HSV 2, correct. That is a comparison between the sensitivity of the IgG test and the herpes western blot

In your opinion should she get the western blot (she may not be able to afford it) or take another igg test since she had taken that valtrex intermittently or move on after two years with the negative result?

That much Valtrex over a year would not impact her testing, I don’t believe.
If she really wants to know her status with greatest accuracy, the blot is the best.
