› Forums › Herpes Questions › Valtrex and hepatic steatosis?
Hi Terri. I tried to scroll back to the thread I started in January but it was taking forever so I decided to just start a new one. This is sort of a follow-up. My partner recently had some routine lab work done and his ALT came back as 85 (standard range 0-44). A year before that it was 91 (same standard range). AST and all other labs normal. Follow-up ultrasound showed hepatic steatosis. This is non-alcohol related, and his healthcare provider simply advised him to take some Vitamin E and get the labs re-checked in 6 months.
In general, would this type of liver situation be considered a contraindication for suppressive therapy with Valtrex? We had talked about it because he is positive for HSV-1 and I am negative. I don’t want him to take anything that would be harmful to him, but I’m unclear as to the risk since his lab was only slightly elevated…
NO. The contraindications for antiviral medicines are kidney related, not liver related.
Terri
