Hi Terri,
So to better answer my question, here’s a quick background. Had an outbreak in April, PCP eyeballed, said its herpes and gave me a 10 day valtrex rx. He tested me for IgM antibodies and both types came back as negative. Had an outbreak in May. PCP, without an evaluation, said it’s herpes and put me on suppressive valtrex daily. Did not test for anything. To be clear, I wasn’t able to get to him for a swab test initially. I finally convinced him to do an IgG blood test in July. HSV1 was negative and HSV2 was equivocal at a value of 1.01. He retested me for IgG hsv2 in ausgust and it came back negative. He told me to discontinue valtrex and monitor. Well I had an outbreak yesterday and he did a swab (I think it’s a culture) this morning. He also told me to start daily valtrex again because he thinks it’s herpes. My question is… does valtrex distort antibodies levels? Is it possible that I received a false negative because I was taking valtrex? Sorry for the short story of a question. Thanks in advance.
In your situation, the Valtrex could have impacted your IgG test if you were infected in April. That’s correct. By now, you should have the swab test results, yes?

Well I should have had them, but I received a message from Quest saying they couldn’t perform the test due to the specimen container being expired. So – I guess I’ll wait until an outbreak happens and try again.
well, that’s unfortunate. Yes, you could wait for another outbreak OR be off Valtrex for a total of 3 months and retest.
