      Hi There –

I noticed my first sore on 11/16. I was diagnosed with HSV2 from a swab test and started taking Valtrex on 11/20. This worked well initially and most of my sores were clear a week later.

After thanksgiving and having to move on 11/28, I experienced a second outbreak that has been much worse. It’s been almost 4 weeks and I feel like I’m seeing little improvement. I have sores on the anal area and quite a few internally. I’ve now taken two rounds of 1000mg Valtrex 2x daily for 10 days. In between those rounds I also tried acicloyvir for 5 days but didn’t notice any difference.

Do you think I should be concerned something else is going on? Do you have any idea why my body responded to the valtrex initially and then seemed to stop? I know some peoples bodies have a longer time adjusting to the virus. Is there anything else I can do or do you think I just have to let it run it’s course?

I’m also taking vitamin c, d, lysine, a probiotic, monolaurin.

It might be worth getting this new set of sores swab tested to be sure you are not having some secondary bacterial infection or fungal infection. One round of antiviral medicine is not going to make future outbreaks resistant to the medication. However, I do think that it might be beneficial for you to start a course of daily medication, and probably 1000 mg a day, for several months to try to get the virus to settle down a bit. But first, try to make certain this is nothing else other than herpes.

Thank you Terri! I’m taking daily valciclovir at 1000mg 2x daily. Do you think I should lower to 1000mg 1x?

Also, if there is nothing else going on do you see any benefit in trying aciclovir again or famvir? Since the Valtrex worked for me the first time I don’t know if it’s worth switching up the meds again. Would appreciate your thoughts.

At this point, I think 1 gram a day is fine and no, I see no reason to switch to either of the other medications. Valtrex is just a better acyclovir because you only have to take it once a day and famvir works about the same but has to be taken twice a day and costs more.

Ok thank you. It should clear up though, yes? My biggest fear is that I’ll have sores for months straight. I haven’t heard of anyone who doesn’t at least get a break from constant symptoms.

If these symptoms really are all related to herpes, you should definitely get a break, yes
