Recently I decided to get STD tested. I’m in my 30’s and have never got tested for anything. I have never had any symptoms, but I got out of a 12-year relationship a year ago. I have had sex with 2 people since then. Now I am looking at being serious with someone eventually and thought I would get test just so I would know with certainty I didn’t have anything. I didn’t even realize herpes was on there to test for because I know how you shouldn’t test unless you have symptoms.
On 6/6 I got tested at quest, when I got my results, I was neg for everything except HSV2 IGG, type specific AB was 2.5. I called right away and was told if I didn’t have symptom’s not to worry it’s probably a false positive. And I could retest in a month. I of course cannot stop worrying I have been researching everything like crazy, I can’t sleep. I decided to order one of those tests online that you prick your finger and mail it back. I did the Herpeselect 2 IgG ELISA on 6/13, those results came back at 1.254.
I consulted with the DR that the online place has and all he did was look at my results and give me antiviral meds, never talked to me.
I actually ordered another one of those online kits and I am waiting for those results.
I have never had any symptoms, except back in the end of Dec I started a new hormonal birth control and was diagnosed with a yeast infection. As soon as I started taking the meds the next day, I felt so much better. I have not had any other issues at all down there. I read that you can be diagnosed with a yeast infection, but it could be herpes. If it was herpes would the meds have helped like they did?
A week after the yest infection situation I had an appt with my gyno for a pap smear and told her about it and she said nothing to worry. The pap smear came back normal.
I know I should just get the blot test done to get my answer, but I am just too nervous.

Also if you have a low IgG result could that mean you’ve had it for a long time?

Your low positive IgG test is very likely a false positive, and you should have a good confirmatory test done, per the CDC. The best is the herpes western blot. There is simply no point in continuing to do IgG tests, which both of yours are. You should just do it. Right now, you have no idea about your true status.

So the dr just called me and said that it doesn’t matter the value if it says positive it is positive. That there are no studies proving other wise. Are they just no educated in this field?
1.Also with a low IgG number would that be a recent exposure or an old one?
2. What would you expect someone’s IgG number to be around after 6 months of exposure?

yes, they are simply not educated in the field. You should print out the CDC STD treatment guidelines about herpes antibody testing – they are very clear about the problems with the IgG test.
1.Also with a low IgG number would that be a recent exposure or an old one?
It could be either or a false positive.2. What would you expect someone’s IgG number to be around after 6 months of exposure?
Well, it varies from person to person but I would think most often higher than 5.Terri
