Male. 40. Blood-tested negative for HSV 1&2 in 2012 and 2017 using IGG test. Herpes a huge fear. Since then, had penis-vaginile sex two to three times with a woman who is also negative for HSV. Recently, though, had penis to vagina contact, no rubbing, with another girl for five or so seconds while fooling around. Her HSV status is not know. She’s had one sexual partner and his status is not known. Seven months later, I masterbate three days in a row with my boxers on – I know, weird. Third day feel a burn and sting. There is a sore. Looks to be right at a seam for the boxers, right near the head of the penis on the shaft, in an area I’ve gotten irritation from masterbation before. It does hurt when soap is put on it and it does partially scab. I put it out of my mind. I cannot tell if it’s a blister. It seems semi-deep into skin. Eventually my mind goes down the rabbit hole. Did I contract hsv from that brief contact? Can rubbing cloth against a penis shaft cause a sore? I did not get it swabbed. 13 days later, the sore is gone but in it’s place is a red spot that is not going away, like the skin has been discolored. Having high anxiety. Could this be an outbreak? Could HSV1 – I did receive some oral sex during the timeframe – lay dormant for a month or more? What are the chances on brief genital to genital contact with no movement? Could this have been a friction burn or friction sore? Obviously I know it’s impossible to diagnose online. Terribly afraid I’ve avoided sex to avoid this infection and now have it through a very, very quick way. Terrified is an understatement.

I think getting HSV from a very short genital to genital contact with no movement is extremely unlikely. it sounds to me more like a real friction burn from masturbating with boxers on, especially if the seam of the boxers were in direct contact with the area of the abrasion. It is also possible to acquire HSV from oral sex and that would be HSV 1. You did an IgG test in 2017 and these are the only contacts you’ve had since then? Have you retested?

I have had some oral sex performed on me since 2017. No vaginal sex except with the woman I know has been tested, and then only a few times. There has been no skin on skin genital grinding since my last test. There was the one instance seven months ago I described, for just a few seconds, no grinding. There may be a few others where there were hugs without clothes but no pressing together of genital regions or anything like that. I’ve been pretty conscious of that…and definitely no sex outside of oral sex.
I know skin on skin can lead to infection. And when I saw that sore or scrape, my mind went into overdrive, though it was seven months after the fact. Again, just terrified. And where the sore was is now a red patch of skin. Trying to assess possibilities. -

I guess I’m just hoping to know how much another test might be needed. I’m petrified of having HSV 2 and I’m just hoping this was low risk, this has been low risk and that not everything I’m seeing is HSV 2…though I know I need to get checked.

if this is a big concern for you then, test. If you decide to do an IgG test first, and it’s negative, great, and if it is positive with a number below 3.5, you will need a confirmatory test or you could just go directly to the herpes western blot, which I could help you with or you could work with your own provider, both are fine. But maybe it’s time to do something instead of just worrying about it.
