Hi Terri I have recently contracted Genital herpes 6 weeks ago. I had a primary outbreak where I suffered from a 102 degree fever for three days and a very sore throat. Afterwards a had an outbreak that lasted about 5 weeks. I did receive a swab from the doctor but the lab rejected it. They did not call me and tell me that until my outbreak was over. I have no history of cold sores. Since I never got my swab I still have no idea what strain I have. A few questions that I have are-

Is it true that where your primary outbreak begins is where you contacted the virus?
Is it true that GHSV-1 almost always has a primary outbreak?
Is it common for someone to have a primary outbreak after contacting HSV-2?
Is there any difference in the way that the blisters present or where they occur in GHSV-1 then GHSV-2?

Is it true that where your primary outbreak begins is where you contacted the virus?
      Yes

Is it true that GHSV-1 almost always has a primary outbreak?
I don’t know what you mean – people with new HSV 1 in my experience are more likely to have a recognizable first outbreak, yes

Is it common for someone to have a primary outbreak after contacting HSV-2?
I don’t understand the question at all. Could you clarify please?

Is there any difference in the way that the blisters present or where they occur in GHSV-1 then GHSV-2?
      No.

I am trying to figure out if my outbreak was an HSV-1 or HSV-2 outbreak basically. I did get it swabbed by the doctor messed it up so the lab would not accept it. I have been exposed to both strains.
I recently took an igg test 6 weeks after my first outbreak. The results were negative for HSV-2 at 0.43 and Positive for hsv-1 at 3.7. I would like to be swabbed but there are no more lesions present. I am a sexworker so it is very important for me to know what is going on in my body. I do plan on retesting in another 6 weeks.

Do you think that it is safe to assume that my recent outbreak was a Ghsv-1 outbreak?
Does it seem likely that it is a HSv-2 outbreak but I am taking a while to seroconvert? With an index of 0.43?

It sounds like your symptoms were in your throat and genital area, right?
Had you recently received oral sex from someone, say 2-10 days before the first genital outbreak? Because that’s the cause of most genital HSV 1 infections. I think your outbreak was far more likely to be HSV 1 than HSV 2 since you are negative for HSV 2. Have you taken any antiviral medicine and if yes, for how long?

My throat was very sore and it looked like I had strep throat. This lasted the entire month that my outbreak did. I don’t know if it was related but it is gone now. I did have oral sex 2-10 days before with someone that I know has a history of cold sores. But I do not know the std status of any of my other clients. I have been on anti viral medicine on and off since my outbreak. I do not know if it has actually helped or not. I have been taking it to prevent transit.

It seems like the only explanation could be hsv-1. Since if I already had it and contracted hsv-2 wouldn’t my outbreak not had been so extensive?

Will antivirals actually keep you from seroconverting?

Is it normal to have the fever first the the blisters? I had my fever then it went away and the next day I had blisters.

If you already had HSV 1 and contracted HSV 2, I don’t think you would have had an extensive outbreak.
But yes, taking an extended dose of antiviral medicine can keep you from seroconverting. How much and for how long have you been taking it?
it is normal to have systemic symptoms prior to lesions appearing sometimes, yes
